Opening with “Guardians of Asgaard,” the band wasted no time summoning their signature blend of brutality and grandeur. Johan Hegg, towering and charismatic, roared through the mic like a warlord rallying his troops. His growls were guttural yet articulate, commanding the crowd with every verse.

There were moments that will stick with me forever. During “Put Your Back Into the Oar,” the crowd transformed into a sea of Vikings, hundreds of fans dropping into their seats to row in unison, arms pumping, voices raised.

The early crowd—many of whom arrived specifically to catch their set—responded with mosh pits and raised fists. Their raw, DIY aesthetic contrasted sharply with the polished grandeur of the headliners, but that contrast only amplified their impact.

Then in what seemed like a spontaneous moment, Phil grabbed the mic to thank everybody once again and said ”There’s really only one way to end this show. Take a deep breath and drive home sober” before crooning out the final verse of Led Zeppelin’s “Stairway to Heaven.” A goose-bump inducing moment that left the metal crowd momentarily speechless.

Review by Ted Remsnyder for the Daily Gazette

“Becoming” offered a serrated edge, and the night’s first real mosh pit broke out during “I’ll Cast a Shadow.”

The spare stage must have featured the most flames set off at SPAC this summer — although I didn’t attend the Rod Stewart show.
