‘America’ Concert ‘Nice Listening’

The moon and 16,500 rock music lovers welcomed “America” to the Saratoga Performing Arts Center Monday night.
The crisp, clear, moonlit night was perfect for sitting on the sloping lawn outside the amphitheater and listening to the well-amplified trio.
Playing a brisk performance of just one and one-half hours, America, nevertheless, was well received. A match-lighting encore brought the three sons-of-Air-Force-Officers back for the additional half hour.
Starting out with their first big hit, “A Horse With No Name,” America moved into some songs from their newest album, “Hat Trick,” to be released soon.
Dan Peek, Dewey Bunnell and Garry Beckley met while attending an American school outside of London where their military fathers were stationed.
They all play guitars as well as piano and sometimes even a violin.
Mixing “highway music” about California with some nostalgic songs about when they were younger contending with the “purple shroud of London’s winter,” the young men mixed their words and music into some nice listening.
In jeans, boots, shoulder length hair the men performed naturally, sometimes turning their backs to the audience and concentrating on their backup drummer or piano player.
