Some came to see the Airplane. Others came to see the Starship. But both well-groomed hippies left over from the 1960s and young teenagers more involved in the event than the band found out that the Jefferson Starship is one of several 1960s bands still playing refined, rumbling rock ‘n’ roll. A slim Grace Slick and Marty Balin took turns singing, dueled during other songs and were joined by rhythm guitarist Paul Kantner on several numbers. The crowd of more than 13,000 was stunned by a 10-minute bass solo by Pete Sears, which included chanting to thumping notes.
