Dinah Shore Versatile At Saratoga

Dinah Shore has to be listed as one of today’s finest vocalists and performers if last night’s performance at the Saratoga Performing Arts Center is any criterion.

She offered a wide range of songs from the standard show tunes to blues and torch, mixed with a Beatle selection, and closed with as stirring a rendition of ‘The Battle Hymn of the Republic” as ever heard. For this number, she was backed by the Wilbur H. Lynch High School Concert Choir of Amsterdam, and they were outstanding.

Despite the cold and rain which has plagued SPAC throughout the week, the audience was appreciative, attentive and responsive. Miss Shore acknowledged the cold several times, even offering to sing “Rudolph, The Red-Nosed Reindeer.”

Among outstanding numbers were “Yesterday,” “Georgia,” “Tennessee Waltz,” “Up, Up and Away” and a lovely medley. Reminiscent of the early 30’s was a delightful segment in which she appeared as the traditional girl vocalist, and won tremendous applause. The women in the audience were not disappointed, for Miss Shore wore three spectacular gowns-a Molly Parnis organza with beaded top, a George Halley pink brocade and a Norell gold lame.

The orchestra was the New York City Ballet Orchestra directed by John Rudby.

Prominent among those in the audience were Mr. and Mrs. C. V. Whitney and children, Heather and Cornelia.

Tonight at SPAC will be folk-singers, Arlo Guthrie and Judy Collins at 8:30.
