O’Sullivan Thrills Youthful Crowd

Gilbert O’Sullivan, making the Saratoga Performing Arts Center the first stop on his American tour, was received enthusiastically Thursday night.
The British singer-composer thrilled the teenagers in the audience with “Alone Again (Naturally)” and “Get Down.”
O’Sullivan, a handsome Irishman, not only sings his own compositions, but also plays the piano at the same time along with his band.
The star was dressed in a black and red 1940s college-day sweater. He asked the audience “What do these stripes on the sleeves mean?”
Other favorites were “Clair” and “It’s Really Out of the Question.”
Even in the chilly September air, the audience would have liked more, but O’Sullivan did not respond to calls for an encore. Instead, he slid out the back door into an awaiting black limousine which sped him down the Avenue of Pines to the Holiday Inn.
Special guest star Maureen McGovern also appeared on the program singing her gold record hit “The Morning After.” She was a crowd pleaser, too.
The only disappointing part of the show was an opening comedy act by Marty Barris, who wasn’t even funny. O’Sullivan made up for this as he came on the stage and charmed the audience with his constant patter leaving no one “truly alone again naturally.”
