Mid-60s Relived

The 13,500 crowd at Monday’s Beach Boys Concert went wild when the group played its old songs from the mid-60s.
Scores of rock groups, two presidents and a war have all passed since the Beach Boys got together in 1963.
But the Beach Boys keep on going and the crowd at the Saratoga Performing Arts Center couldn’t get enough of such “oldies” as “Good Vibrations,” “Little Surfer Girl,” “Barbara Ann” and “Rhonda.”
When the three brothers and their five friends and cousins played selections from their new “Holland” album, however, the audience went quiet, clearly preferring the old songs.
The group didn’t look like the short-haired surfers that appeared on the cover of their first album in 1963 but much of the harmonizing and twangy guitar was still there.
At one point during the two-hour concert several exuberant members of the audience hopped onto the stage but were quickly asked to hop back down and things proceeded as usual. Police stood guard near the stage as the audience started to fill the front aisles.
Brian, Dennis and Carl Wilson (who introduced their mother to the crowd before the show started) were joined by their friends and cousins Mike Love, Alan Jardine, Ricky Fataar and Blondie Chaplin on the stage in front of a parachute prop that was used as a screen for lighting effects.
