Peggy Lee is a singer of many moods, as she demonstrated Sunday night at the Saratoga Performing Arts Center. In every one of them, she was received enthusiastically by the crowd of 3,200.

(It says something about the taste of most persons when Duke Ellington draws 1,200, Peggy draws 3,200 and Burt Bacharach draws 15,000 plus.)

Myself, I prefer the old Peggy Lee of “Why Don’t You Do Right” and “I’ll Get By,” the only jazz-oriented songs she sang. Although it is hard to fault the new, offbeat Peggy Lee who talk-sings such things as “Is That All There Is,” “You’ll Remember Me” and “My Rock and Foundations.”

The last is a new Burt Bacharach tune. Miss Lee remarked: “Dionne (Warwick) didn’t even do it.”

Miss Lee also sang many of her hits, including “Manana,” and “Fever.” The latter she does an engaging parody of.

SPAC management did not endear itself to much of the audience, who were over 30 for the most part, by using Main Street East as the warmup band. It consists of a group of young musicians whose hard-driving electronic opener turned off many.
